Congratulations! Your web site has received our special honorable mentions from the 1998 site reviews. Because of the extremely high qualifications for selection as an honorable mentions site, less than 15% of all site nominations score high enough to receive this award. In fact, an honorable mentions site is of significant artistic and/or creative promise.
Your site has been evaluated by an exceptional team of fine and computer artists, designers, and new media experts.
The composition of a web site is evaluated in terms of in its artistic quality, page layout and balance, and use of color. These elements are essential for an eye-catching web site. Do the pages delight the eye? Do the colors give a sense of depth or dimension? Or do the colors help you focus on text and artwork?
What is the focus of a particular web site? Is it focused well or poorly? Is the message reinforced by the graphic design? Is the text size easy to read? An evaluation of a web site's focus considers the theme of both the content and artistic style. Does the viewer feel lost or found? Another title for this category could have been unity and form.
The mechanics of a web site are difficult to evaluate. Basically, this category identifies possible factors for visual irritation. Are the sites a pleasure to browse? Do they load fast? Or do they reward you after they kept you waiting? Does everything work smoothly? Has the site attracted bugs? If the site were a ceiling fan, would it wobble?
Of course, we understand that the browser wars are responsible for an incredible number of casualties in this category. Therefore, we overlook problems that occur in one browser and not another. For example, if it works in Netscape Communicator 4.0, but has very minor problems in Microsoft's IE 4.0, we will overlook a bug or two.
The last category is creativity. Does the web designer exercise creativity, resourcefulness, ingenuity, and/or simplicity. Is the writing good? Are the graphics original? Are the graphics creatively placed on a web page? Are the designers rummaging through the trash? In other words, are they using downloads from one of the many giant trash dumps of cheap free graphics and sprites?
There is no distinction between web sites that may be classified elsewhere as either commercial or personal. On the Internet, all web sites are equal. While it is true that there is really no distinction between the value of a commercial or personal web site in terms of its artistic value, we found that artistic sensibilities are reflected differently by different cultures, different generations, and different age groups. These are further considerations that are now apart of our review methods.
Since this site review was started in July 1996, the criteria for the eye candy award has reflected the high standards, exciting new possibilities, and real practicalities of web design. To date, over 50,000 web sites have been reviewed by Eye Candy WWW Site Reviews. About one in every 1000 nominations score high enough to receive this award. We estimate that Eye Candy award-winning web sites rank in top 1% of all sites on the world wide web.
The Eye Candy Award is sponsored by the Eye Candy WWW Site Reviews, a web site review service founded by Steve Deckert of Decware. He initiated this special review to encourage artistic expression and further the development of artistic possibilities in the world of new media. Under his management, the review drew attention to the artistic talent on the world wide web and offered recommendations to thousands of web designers.
Judging Good Ink to be a solid example of the highest design standards that Mr. Deckert had sought to identify in his review, Mr. Deckert invited the Good Ink team in 1997 to assume the Eye Candy WWW Site Reviews. Good Ink continues to be honored and pleased to make a valuable contribution in encouraging the advancement of artistic expression and exciting new artistic possibilities through the Eye Candy WWW Site Reviews.
We hope you will enjoy visiting our new and growing list of Eye Candy Award winners. 1996 and 1997 award winners and semi-finalists continue to be featured and we encourage you to visit these web sites identified for their outstanding artistic presentations.
